Encoder tips

  • Start with Original or High Quality — they preserve the source resolution and look great.
  • Use a social preset for Reels, Shorts and TikTok — it sets the right dimensions and frame rate.
  • Pick H.264 if you will share the file widely — it plays in every browser, editor and device.
  • Use Copy mode to change containers without re-encoding — it is instant.
  • Downscaling to 1080p or 720p saves a lot of time and file size with minimal visible difference.
  • Leave the bitrate field empty to let FFmpeg choose — it usually makes a better decision than manual values.

Frequently asked questions

Is my video uploaded to a server?
No. In the normal workflow your video is read and processed locally in your browser. The server only serves the application files.
Which codec should I choose?
H.264 is the safest default — it plays everywhere. HEVC gives smaller files but needs modern hardware. VP9 is efficient but slower. Use Copy if you only need a container change.
Why is HEVC or VP9 marked "Not in this build"?
Some FFmpeg builds do not ship every encoder. The app detects availability at startup and disables what is missing so you never pick a broken option.
Why is there no AV1 encoding?
This build does not include an AV1 encoder, and AV1 encoding is extremely slow in a browser. H.264 covers virtually all real-world sharing needs.
How long does encoding take?
It depends on your CPU, the video resolution, duration and the settings you choose. A short 720p clip finishes quickly; a long 4K video takes longer. The progress bar tracks FFmpeg and shows an estimate.
What happens if the browser tab is closed during encoding?
Processing stops immediately and the partial output is discarded. You can pick the same file and start again.
